We’ll come up with a name for all these at some point. My latest experiment with using the MPC One, Drumbrute Impact, OB6, and Modular using our Portastudio to record everything down.
I did some trickery here – the song was recorded in at a faster speed and I both slowed it down slightly while lowering the pitch by adjusting the speed/pitch knob on the Portastudio down a bit. I give it this beautiful sonic character that we would not have had by just changing the BPM and transposing the MIDI tracks down.
It was all recorded down to 3 tracks, trying to leave room for John to add stuff. Since we only have 4 tracks total, it does mean at least for idea-boarding we may have to bounce tracks and/or sub-mix – or simply reduce the number of instruments and sound sources we are using. Part of the Made On Tape exploration has been exploring these limitations on purpose. A bit like when we make our chipsurf stuff, since I’m almost always tracking the chiptune parts on a single GameBoy running LSDJ. Similar vibe. This is why there’s only 3 instruments in use here, noting the OB6 is doing both bass and fills at the same time.
This is probably the most “complete” song idea I’ve made with the MPC thus far. Not sure if we’ll turn this into a full on song or not yet though.
